Be Prepared, ... the motto of the Boy Scouts of America, but today those words are coming from the Boy Scouts to our troops in Afghanistan; ... be prepared to open about 500 pound of school supplies! St. Emily Catholic School's Boy Scout Troop 235 collected notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons and more, after Sunday Mass and by going door to door in the Mt. Prospect, Illinois/Chicago suburb. Scout leader Jack Cerniglia told me his son Joe and Joe's fellow Eagle Scout's collect all the supplies as a service project. If folks didn't have any supplies, the Scouts would ask for cash. They used those fund to ship the eleven cartons to Col. John Carmichael for his troops to distribute once the "goods" arrive in about 6-weeks. Everything was mailed via- U.S. Postal Service from Mt. Prospect last Friday. Jack told me; "... from the beginning, my son Joe has been working with General Dan McNeil US Army, who was very instrumental in giving Joe some guidance and from there Joe ran with it. Since General Dan spent some time in Afghanistan, he new first hand that the kids did not even have class rooms let alone supplies; they met in open areas to try to hold class!" What a great gift, letting our troops spread goodwill. If you are wondering what happened to any of the "leftover" funds ... the Scouts had that covered too. They donated every last penny to a Mt. Prospect area food shelter! God bless the Boy Scouts of America, especially Mt. Prospect's St' Emily School's Troop 235! The Boy Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best |
