Chicago Sun-Times Reporter Richard Roeper Takes A Shot At Our Bear Fight Songs CD, ... Or Does He?

We have been having a blast with the success of our Bears Fight Songs CD. One of the biggest thrill's we have had happened last night. My daughters and I were watching the sports segment on television during dinner. As the Bears were walking out on to the field during "media day" in Miami, Bears defensive-back "Peanut" Tillman yells out to the press; "Chicago Bears, we are who ya thought we were." We all looked at each other and said, "Did you hear that?"

Another thrill was learning that one of the classes (not my daughters) at the Bataille Academy of Danse where my daughter Danielle takes dances, are performing a dance to "Woof Woof, Bop Bop" for the big Spring Show. One of the teachers suggested to Danielle that the teachers may dance to Ron Hawking's version of "We ARE Who Ya Thought We Were ... Cool Jazz." (Personally, that would be the biggest thrill from this entire project.)

Chicago Sun-Times reporter Richard Roeper wrote a very fair and honest piece about the latest craze, ... writing Bears fight songs. He is 100% correct, even when he says my lyric lines are weak. In my opinion the lyric do fit this song perfectly and they sound "tougher" on the song than they do when they are just "hanging out" there, naked in print with no music hiding them, ... but we weren't trying to change modern music as we know it, we were writing a fun, funny tune with a great hook that took a shot at a big-mouth coach who was trying to make the Bears sound bad after his team totally colapst on Monday Night Football. (Roeper points out that although he hates the song, the hook is stuck in his head, as well.) I loved his article so much that I want to share it with everyone.

Roeper writes;

I'm not here to start no trouble, but stop with the Bears songs

Here's an idea: Why doesn't some local artist compose and record a tribute to the 2006 Bears? You know, a modern-day counterpart to the "Super Bowl Shuffle"?

Oh wait. That's already been done -- about a THOUSAND TIMES.

On Tuesday morning, I picked up a copy of a CD. At the 7-11.

I'm fairly certain this was the first time I'd ever purchased a CD at a 7-11.

The CD was titled "Bear Fight Songs," and it was priced to move at just $9.99.

The lead cut is "We ARE Who Ya Thought We Were," by Steele. The music is somewhat reminiscent of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part II."

As for the lyrics, a sample:

Never stop til ya drop

Gotta give it all ya got
Push 'em back, move 'em out
Everybody scream and shout
First down, second down
Third down -- touchdown
Hey hey mama
Now the house is on fire
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Chicago Bears -- we ARE who ya thought we were. ...

Help.

Set the iPod to (Super Bowl) shuffle
I don't mean to go all Simon Cowell on Steele. "We ARE Who Ya Thought We Were" is certainly no worse than a dozen other Bears-related insta-tunes I've heard -- but let's face it, those lyrics aren't going to keep Bernie Taupin or even Bernie Stone awake at night.

The title of the song is a play on former Arizona Cardinals' coach Dennis Green's infamous meltdown after the Bears had pulled off one of the greatest comebacks (and/or the Cardinals had experienced an almost unprecedented collapse) ever seen on "Monday Night Football." It was one of the best blowups since Lee Elia, and it went something like this:

"The Bears are what we thought they were. They're what we thought they were! We played them in preseason. ... The Bears are who we thought they were! That's why we took the damn field! Now if you want to crown 'em, then crown their ass. ... But they are who we thought they were, and we let 'em off the hook!"

And off he went as a reporter cracked, "Thanks coach."

It was an instant YouTube classic -- but as insults go, it's not even "Winning Ugly." It's not as if Bears fans are walking around saying, "We are who you thought we were." Does that even make sense? Why not just title your song, "I Know You Are But What Am I?"

I've yet to hear a new Bears song that's going to outlast the week. Have you?

No offense to all the talented artists who are trying to come up with the next "Super Bowl Shuffle," but the Bears already have a fight song. It's called "Bear Down, Chicago Bears," and it still works.

Not that "The Super Bowl Shuffle" is really any better than "We ARE Who Ya Thought We Were," or "Go Bears Go (Don't Stop)," or "Woof, Woof, Bop, Bop," or "The Mighty Mighty Bears," or "We Da Bears," or any of the other tributes to the 2006 Bears. Come on, "Shuffle" is pretty awful, but that dopey melody was infectious (like a virus) and the video was pure camp entertainment 20 years ago, and it's even funnier today.

I don't think we'll even remember any of these new Bears tunes in 2026.

Kodak-Canon-Sony moments
When the Bears stepped off the plane in Miami, several players were toting camcorders, capturing the moment for the family video scrapbook. Throughout the week, up to and including the postgame activities, you'll see players shooting home video.

It's been that way in the sports world for years. When I walked near the Sox dugout minutes before the start of Game One of the 2005 World Series, I saw at least one player and one staffer shooting home video.

I don't know if I've ever used this word to describe a pro athlete, but there's something almost cute about that. That you'd want to shoot home video even as you're inside an event that will be recorded from a hundred different angles by the best and most sophisticated video recording systems in the world, just so you'll have a personal permanent record -- kind of endearing. Guess there's still room for moments that aren't jaded.

Uh-oh. I can't get "We ARE Who Ya Thought We Were" out of my head. I'm not kidding.

Help.

Roeper did not point out the fact that the original, real, official, orange and blue version of Bear Down Chicago Bears by Bill Archer and the Big Bears Band IS in fact, on our CD also! I called John Steele and read him Roeper's article (poor John didn't have time to read the paper this morning because he has been boxing and shipping our new shipment of CD's to our newest partner White Hen, all morning, moo ha ha) and we both laughed our asses off.

By the way Mr. Roeper, if you think you hate this project of ours, wait until you see what Bill, John and I have planned for next season. You may just jump out your window! If that happens, we will send flowers.

It's a good thing you don't take the critics too seriously. The CD is being used in ways you didn't imagine plus its selling and that counts for something! Also, it's pretty cool to hear an actual player acknowlege your song in public. I bet your girls were proud of their dad!

      Lisa,

I have to say I really appreciate your constant support.

As far as critics go, ... they never bothered me. I have been bashed and praised and neither really made a difference in my life. I march to a different drummer, I try and do what I think is right and I try to help as many people as I can during my journey through life. Having some fun is very important and that's exactly what Bear Fight Songs is doing for all of us right now. When someone says the hate the song publicly we all laugh and support each other, ... when someone says they love the song, ... we still laugh and support each other.

Our Band has been working very hard behind the scenes preparing for a very intense "world tour" starting in the spring. We will entertain hundreds of thousands of troops during the tour, ... that's the real focus of my music right now.

If you like me, get into line-1, ... if ya hate me, get into line-2.

Lisa, thanks for always being in line-1. Although I have never met you, ... when we do meet, you are getting a BIG hug.

      Joe

      Joe,

Hey, you did a lot better than I can do!

I appreciate that you took the column in the spirit in which it was written. I really didn't mean to rip anybody too hard for having fun with the Bears. (Compared to some of my movie reviews, that was a love letter!)

      Wishing you all the best,

      Richard
