I received an inspirational email today from a friend and I want to share some points with you.

Over the past year I have been doing a lot of "blogging" about freedom. We hear that word all the time. We have always been taught that America is built on freedom. Our forefathers fought and died for freedom, ... even William Wallace of "Braveheart" fame, screamed "freeeeedom" as he was being executed by the King of England.

Our politicians in Washington DC are elected to help preserve our freedom. Our troops fight for freedom. Police Officers "serve and protect" freedom, and you'll even hear "I need my freedom" as an excuse for couples about to break up.

Our freedom's were spelled out in the "Bill of Rights." And frankly, I believe we Americans have been spoiled by freedom. Freedom is NOT a right, ... it's a privilege. Believe me, we can lose our freedom if America, and our way of life is not preserved.

Our troops have seen both sides and they'll tell you freedom is very hard work. Think about it, ... it would be easier to be enslaved by others opinions. You could be a captive by your own self-serving desires. Or just sit back and follow and do as you are told. (Nazi Germany, Japan circa WWII, USSR, Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait during Iraqi control in 1990 come to mind)

Yet, freedom is worth the effort. With freedom, anything can happen. A movie star can become president! A kid working at McDonald's can grow up and become the CEO of the company! Anyone can go to school to become what they would like to become. Even a 52-year old man can still perform in a great rock and roll band and live his dream for years (a cheap plug for my band; The 101st Rock Division!)

Freedom means you think for yourself. True freedom means you live with an authentic, meaningful purpose that is uniquely you! Freedom requires effort, commitment, some creativity and persistence. Without persistence there would be no great people on earth. One of Winston Churchill greatest speeches was only seven words long; "Never give up, ... Never ever give up!" There is no use for persistence without freedom.

My friend makes the point that if freedom is to endure in your life, it must be supported by responsibility. Without responsibility, freedom will become decaying, meaningless anarchy.

Yes, freedom can be a bit scary and intimidating at times because it constantly asks you to make decisions, but in the same breath, freedom is great simply for the fact that it gives you the power to choose!

Most of my younger life I believed I was free simply for the fact that I was born in America. Today I realize that my freedom has been fought for and paid for by men and women have died for over two-centuries, just to protect it. Those same men and women fought for the freedoms of homegrown Americans to spit upon, drag through the dirt and burn our flag, ... the same flag that drapes the coffins of the freedom-protectors when they are killed in action, defending the stars and stripes and her freedom.

I feel so lucky to be an American. God bless America!

To our veterans and troops; ... thank you for our freedom!

      Joe,

I am so proud of you...I don't need to tell you what a great thing your doing.

Just thought I'd tell you when you last met my children they were small...my oldest child, daughter...Jamie graduated from the Naval Academy and is now positioned today on a guided missile destroyer, the USS Roosevelt deployed keeping our country safe. Jamie was Valedictorian of her high school, college recruited athlete and could have gone to any school she chose yet like you she was moved by what happened in 2001 and felt she had to give something back. She is the best looking little Ensign our tremendous Navy has ever had...God bless you and kids like her all over the world for allowing us to live our lives in peace and in the greatest country in the world.

You SOB! I miss ya man. For others reading this, ... Greg and I went to grade school together and more importantly we were in our 1st band together, Rick Sabatino's "Concrete Cable" in Oak Park.

I am so proud of your daughter Jamie. Please send me her email address and her mailing address. You can't believe the wonderful people who will write her and send her some great care packages who also read this blog.

It looks like I'll be performing at the Indy 500 on Armed Forces Day on May 20th. I don't know if you get over there much, but if you do, let's hook up!

      Love ya Lups,

      Joe
