A Different Christmas StoryThis entry was posted on December 22, 2007 5:57 PM and is filed under the troops. The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> My daughter beside me, angelic in rest./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Transforming the yard to a winter delight./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /x-tad-bigger>/fontfamily>My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> And I crept to the door just to see who was near./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "What are you doing?" I asked without fear,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts../bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> To the window that danced with a warm fire's light/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /x-tad-bigger>/fontfamily>I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> That separates you from the darkest of times./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> No one had to ask or beg or implore me,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> And now it is my turn and so, here I am./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I've not seen my own son in more than a while,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> The red, white, and blue... an American flag./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I can live through the cold and the being alone,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Away from my family, my house and my home./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> I can carry the weight of killing another,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Or lay down my life with my sister and brother../bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Who stand at the front against any and all,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> /bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily>"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "But isn't there something I can do, at the least,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> It seems all too little for all that you've done,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> For being away from your wife and your son."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/fontfamily> "Just tell us you love us, and never forget./bigger>/color>/fontfamily> To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,/bigger>/color>/fontfamily> To stand your own watch, no matter how long./bigger>/color>/fontfamily> For when we come home, either standing or dead,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily> To know you remember we fought and we bled./bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily> Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily> That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily> A special "thank you" to the following;
