It was less than a week ago that Col. Curt Ames, USMC, contacted Marty Smith III, USMC (ret.) a member of the Marine Corp League of Lake Country, Illinois, and asked him if he could help "drum up some business" and send some "love" to 15-deployed Marines from Great Lakes Naval Base serving in Iraq. I wrote the story with a plea to readers of this blog, and I have to tell you ... I am so proud and overwhelmed with the response from you ... my readers.

UPDATE:

Marty Smith has send me an email that I want to share with you.

Marty writes;

Joe,

YOU THE MAN!  Amazing! Just wait until we get some 100-names, then we'll be famous. Just so you know, so far this is what has transpired in only 6-days.

1.    Kirk Morris sent out cards from his son Dylan's school with phone-cards to boot.

2.    Georgette and Roy Frank of The Heart of a Marine Foundation, sent out their special "care-package"  box's for the male and female Marines.

3.    Marine Corp League, Lake County, Illinois-801, sent out letters to the Marines and sent requests for help. Whoever responds will send more ... so there will be more to follow.

4.    Through Joe Cantafio's blog the following has started and a lot has already been accomplished.

    a. Yellow Ribbon Support Group of Palatine, Illinois are sending out their special "care packages."

    b. A Church group, A Grammar School and a High School were contacted by Rhonda Buell, (former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader) who read Joe's blog and took this project seriously. The latest from Rhonda in Dallas, TX ... starting this weekend, her contacts are sending care packages, cards from both the HS and Grade schools and a group of Girls Scouts in Dallas are sending 400 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.

    c. Through Joe's friend, Celeste Anthony, a high school teacher in Michigan; her school has been baking cookies for the past two days in their Home Eco. Classes, some students are writing letters while others are making cards.

    d. Through Joe's friend Sarah Dierks, a 7th grade history teacher at Hoover School in Waterloo, Iowa; hundreds of homemade cards and letters were mailed Tuesday afternoon.

    e.  Through Joe's blog, Karen Jennings, founder of Military Support Group of New Jersey, is sending their special care packages this weekend.

    f.  Joe's daughter and her class have sent out letters, cards and packages as well.

This is amazing!

These Kids (Marines) will think they have become celebrities, just like Joe, LOL. Joe ... how cool will that be when you play at their base and they get to meet you.  It sends chills down my spine just thinking about it.

Joe, one last favor, can you fix the federal deficit too??????? LOL

Semper Fi

Marty Smith III, USMC (ret)

My hats off to Marty Smith for taking the bull by the horns and completing his mission. Retired Marty?!?!?!?!, you could have fooled me! I really did nothing but beg.

Welcome to the love network folks ... for those of you who are still sending cards, letters, packages and love, please write in to this blog so others may see what these great Marines have received ... AND ... THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. You have no idea what your selflessness and kindness is about to do in about 1 1/2 weeks when these 15-Marines get mail from home ... for the first time. They will never forget you!

I love this country!

      Joe-

I forwarded a copy of your blog entry to the Soldiers Angels contact and as you can see below, they will be taken care of.

Also gave it to my friend who is a girl scout leader for troop 1588 out of Countryside School in Barrington and she will have the girls do a letter writing project later this week.

Lotsa lovin' heading their way very soon !
